Symposium Focus

On November 21st, we hosted a hybrid – in-person or virtual – interactive discussion with passionate leaders forging a nationally recognized model of cross-sector partnerships and data-driven collaboration to reduce overdose deaths and save lives.

This opioid symposium, United Efforts Combating the Opioid Crisis and Saving Lives in NYC, will showcase the unified, multi-agency approach being used to combat the opioid epidemic in NYC, and beyond. It will serve to help engage and inform other community leaders, stakeholders and decision makers around the country on best practices and implementation strategies in this area and how this coordinated model can be replicated in other communities.

Preliminary data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene show that overdose deaths were lower in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same time period in 2023. This is the first drop in four years. Despite this promising news, overdose deaths continue to plague the city. Every four hours, someone dies of a drug overdose in New York City. This undoubtedly continues to be a pubic health emergency not only in New York City, but across the nation.

This convening was intended for individuals who participate in, lead, support, or are interested to connect directly with colleagues from diverse sectors and specializations to discuss relevant issues and trends, share ideas, exchange resources, and gain new skills to improve programs and enhance lifesaving strategies. Participants at any level of experience addressing the opioid and overdose crisis are encouraged to attend.
